Living room

Living room Whether it is a formal place to entertain guests or a more casual “hub” of activity the living room deserves extra time and effort. Carefully plan the furniture arrangement: If the room is large (over 20' in length), consider two seating areas. If the room has a natural focal point (fireplace or picture window), arrange the main seating around it. If you own a dramatic piece of furniture, make that the centerpiece. To make the living room truly memorable, highlight or create a focal point: A fireplace is a natural showstopper. Decorate the hearth with a large basket of dried flowers or some neatly arranged twigs or birch logs. A large mirror over a mantelpiece or console adds depth and height to the room. If the room lacks a natural focal point, create your own: Place a favorite table, bureau or writing desk against a wall and embellish it with elegantly framed pictures.

Decorator’s Secret

Decorator’s Secret Arranging Furniture:
If you want to make sure that the sofa or table you’re about to purchase is the correct size, cut out its width and length using newspaper and masking tape. Lay the pattern on the floor to determine if the size is right. You can make a pattern for each major piece of furniture to test different furniture arrangements.

Family room

Family room This is the real living room: It’s where you read the paper, watch television, listen to music or just relax. Since it serves so many functions to so many people, be realistic in your choice of furniture and fabrics. Use comfort and practicality as your guide: A large seating area is essential for this room. Make sure that the upholstery is durable and easy to clean. (Washable cotton canvas or denim slipcovers or stain-hiding tapestries are good choices). Entertainment centers organize audio and video equipment. Use freestanding or built-in shelving for books, magazines, toys and games.

Dining room

Dining room Whether grand or humble, make the dining room a welcoming place for family and friends to gather. Be sure the dining table is the correct shape and size for the room. If the room is square, use a round table to stimulate conversation. For large dining rooms, a chandelier or hanging light fixture will help create a more intimate feeling. For very small dining rooms, a table with leaves is a real space saver. For an inviting touch, place a bowl or basket of seasonal fruit on the table or sideboard.
